My Lord,

IN taking up this volume, your lordship will perceive that, under benign auspices, a private individual may be elevated to public notice, by the gracious aid of splendid patronage.

Every man, my lord, has his ambition; and, mine would be proudly gratified, could I so grace language as to make my cordial thanks acceptable to my illustrious and generous benefactors.

But, with all this inability to express the gratitude I feel for new-born benefits, there is an impulse, my lord, peculiar to my respect for your domestic virtues, that might give eloquence to every dictate of my heart, were not silent admiration a more pleasing tribute to habitual benevolence.
