LATHAM.

The first Latham progenitor of whom we have any account was Henry, lord of Latham, who had three sons: Robert, Richard and Roger. The original castle of the Lathams, which, according to written accounts by Seacome in his "History of the House of Stanley," must have been one of the most imposing in England, is supposed to have been built by Robert, eldest son of Henry, in the twelfth century. It is described as having in 1644 "walls six feet thick and upon the parapets were nine towers." In each tower were six pieces of ordnance. Within the walls was a moat 24 feet wide and six feet deep, and upon the brink of the moat, between the graff and the walls, was a strong row of palisades which surrounded the whole. In the centre was a great square tower very strongly built, called "Eagle Tower." A drawbridge led to the house, on both sides of which were towers, the whole of such vast extent that several thousand soldiers could be accommodated within. (A. R. Justice.)
