When about fifteen years of age he removed to the Catskill Mountains section in New York state. Later he lived in Virginia and more recently in Bridgewater and Lanesville, Conn. Mr. Baxter was an old time hatter by trade, and conversant with all its branches, and was a skilled mechanic.
